FOR YOUR PROTECTION
New Zealand legislation provides limited coverage for personal injury. Backpacker strongly recommends that all
people travelling in New Zealand take out personal travel insurance.
All vehicles are insured for the damage to the vehicle or to the property of a Third Party. The hirer is responsible for the first NZ$1,900 (“the excess”) for the Breezer if the driver is between the ages of 18 and 20 or NZ$1,000 (“the excess”) for the Breezer if the driver is 21+ years of age, NZ$1,500 (“the excess”) for Nomad and Wanderer campervans, NZ$3,500 (“the excess”) for Quattro and Six-Pack campervans of the cost of damage to Third Party property or to the rented vehicle, including single vehicle accident, windscreen and tyre damage, towing and recovery costs, theft, fire, break-in or vandalism with the exception of the ‘exclusions’. This also includes the cost of the daily rental for the period the vehicle is off fleet for accident repairs.
Please see the ‘Exclusions’ section below, whereby all insurance cover will be made void.
The excess is applicable regardless of who is at fault and must be paid at the time the accident report is completed, not at the completion of the rental. The excess will be refunded if Backpacker is successful in recovering the cost of the damages from the Third Party. Please note that Third Party claims can take months to resolve.
The excess applies in respect of each claim, not rental.
The excess can be reduced, in most circumstances, by the purchase of Excess Reduction Option 1 or Excess Reduction Option 2. Note Excess Reduction 2 is included in the Smart Pack.

This also includes the cost of the daily rental rate for the period the vehicle is off fleet for accident repairs. The excess applies in respect of each claim, not rental.
Please see the ‘Exclusions’ section, whereby all Excess Reduction cover will be made void.
Please see the ‘Exclusions’ section, whereby all Excess Reduction cover will be made void.

With Excess Reduction Option 2 the hirer will not have to pay excess at all for any damage to Third Party property or to the rented vehicle, including single vehicle accident, windscreen and tyre damage, towing and recovery costs, theft, fire, break in or vandalism with the exception of the ‘exclusions’. This also includes the cost of the daily rental rate for the period the vehicle is off fleet for accident repairs. The excess applies in respect of each claim, not rental.
Note Excess Reduction 2 is included in the Smart Pack.
Please see the ‘Exclusions’ section, whereby all Excess Reduction cover will be made void.
No Worries Cover Option (PCO2)
The no worries cover option is a one off fee of $NZ 50 per hire. The no worries Cover Option is only available when Excess Reduction 2 has been purchased.
With the no worries cover option, the hirer will not have to pay any excess at all for any damage to the vehicle or property of a third party with the exception of the ‘exclusions’. This will include accidental overhead or underbody damage to the vehicle. Please note overhead and underbody damage cover is excluded unless the no worries cover option has been purchased.
Note: Excess reduction 2 and PCO2 are included in the smart pack.
TYRE AND WINDSCREEN DAMAGE – Where the hire has a nil excess up to one windscreen and two tyres will be covered for accidental damage. Should these amounts be exceeded the cost to repair or replace the items will not be covered and will be the responsibility of the hirer.
BACKPACKER STRONGLY RECOMMENDS OUR CUSTOMERS TAKE NO WORRIES COVER FOR TRAVEL WITH COMPLETE PEACE OF MIND.
Exclusions: All insurance cover will be made void if any of the following ‘Exclusions’ are breached:
1. Overhead and underbody damage to the vehicle – except where no worries cover has been purchased.
2. Any water related damage which includes, but is not limited to:
a) any vehicle submersion
b) creek or river crossing
c) driving through low plain flooded areas
d) beach driving
3. Personal belongings. Backpacker recommends the hirer does not leave valuables in the vehicle and that they have insurance to cover for the loss/damage of personal belongings.
4. Any damage caused by willful misconduct (e.g. sitting or standing on the bonnet or roof of the vehicle).
5. Any damage caused while driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
6. A single vehicle roll over occurs.
7. The Customer will be liable for any cost associated with the incorrect use of fuel or the use of Bio Diesel which should not be used (fuel being diesel or petrol), or water or other contamination of fuel.
8. The cost to retrieve or recover a vehicle, which may include, but is not limited to a vehicle that has become bogged, submerged or has been abandoned.
9. The cost to replace keys, which have been lost or retrieval of keys, which have been locked in a vehicle.
10.The vehicle rented may only be used to carry the maximum number of passengers as dictated by the vehicle type. If more passengers are carried than what is allowed Backpacker does not accept any liability.
11.Drivers not identified on the rental agreement and/or drivers that have a licence that has been cancelled or suspended and/or drivers who have a licence that is classified as a learners or probationary licence.
VEHICLE SECURITY DEPOSIT
Upon vehicle collection, a security deposit is required. The amount is determined by the excess reduction option selected.
For security purposes, only a credit card can be used to provide a vehicle security deposit. The Credit Card holder must be present and able to sign for the vehicle security deposit upon vehicle collection. The credit card holder is jointly and severally liable for any damage to the rental vehicle.
Debited bonds are subject to a 1.75% credit card administration fee in addition to the bond amount when the credit card used is either a Visa or MasterCard. This administration fee is refunded when the bond is refunded. If a bond is retained the administration fee is retained.
If an Excess Reduction Option is not selected, the security deposit is NZ$1900 for the Breezer where a driver is 18-20 years of age or NZ$1,000 for the Breezer if the driver is 21+ years of age, NZ$1,500 for the Nomad and Wanderer campervans and NZ$3,500 for the Quattro and Six-Pack campervans payable by credit card. In the case of the rented vehicle being the Breezer where one driver is 18-20 years of age and another is 21+ the NZ$1900 security deposit applies.
The NZ1900/$1000/$1,500/3,500 is debited to the hirer’s credit card when the vehicle is collected. For this reason it is important that the hirer have the funds available on the credit card and that the amount does not exceed the hirer’s daily withdrawal allowance available on the credit card.
If Excess Reduction Option 1 has been taken the security deposit is NZ$500 for the Breezer, NZ$750 for the Nomad and the Wanderer vehicles and NZ$1,800 for the Quattro and the Six Pack vehicles.
The NZ$500/$750/$1,800 is taken as an imprint to the hirer’s credit card when the vehicle is collected. An imprint simply records a figure against the hirer’s credit card of NZ$500/$750/$1,800 that Backpacker can then debit if required.
If Excess Reduction Option 2 is selected with or without No Worries Cover Option or the package booked is the Smart Pack the security deposit is NZ$220.
The NZ$220 is taken as an imprint to the hirer’s credit card when the vehicle is collected. An imprint simply records a figure against the hirer’s credit card of NZ$220 that Backpacker can then debit if required.
The security deposit is fully refundable provided the vehicle is returned on time, to the correct location, undamaged, in a clean condition and with full fuel tanks (fuel being petrol or diesel) and gas bottle. Except where the customer has purchased the Pre-Purchase Gas Option (PGO is included in the Smart Pack) and/or Pre Purchase Fuel (PPF), failure to return the vehicle with full petrol or diesel tanks and/or a full LPG bottle will result in refill charges, which will be advised upon return of the vehicle.
Backpacker reserves the right to retain an NZ$220 cleaning fee if the vehicle is not returned in a clean condition. The toilet and waste water tank must be emptied prior to the return of the vehicle, or an additional NZ$125 soiling fee will be retained.
FOR SECURITY PURPOSES, ONLY THE HIRERS CREDIT CARD CAN BE USED FOR VEHICLE SECURITY DEPOSITS.
RENTAL DURATION - The minimum rental period is five days with the exception of rentals with a collection date between the 23th of December and the 10th of January. These rentals are subject to a ten days minimum.
- Minimum rental period is 10 days when a vehicle is being collected from the North Island and is being returned to the South Island if the rental commences between the months of October through to March.
- Minimum rental periods are subject to change during peak periods.
- Rental days are calculated on a calendar day basis. When calculating the number of days a vehicle is rented, the day of pick-up is counted as day one of the rental, regardless of pick up time. the day of the vehicle's return is counted as the final day of the rental.
- Late pick-up or early return of vehicle, doesn not entitle the hirer to any refund of the unused portion of the rental.
- Late returns will be charged on a per day basis. Failure to obtain authorisation for a rental extension will result in a daily fee of NZ$150 in addition to daily rate.

Terms of booking on this website
Information disclaimer
The rates on this website are often heavily discounted. This is due to our negotiated rates and bulk buying power. On very rare occasions, a rate may be displayed incorrectly due to our, or a vehicle supplier's error. In such a case, if you book with us at a quoted rate that is incorrect, we will notify you of any price change and give you the option to proceed or cancel. We make every effort to keep information on our site up to date, but we cannot guarantee this website is free of errors or omissions and retain the right to update or change the information published at any time.
Liability
To the extent permitted by law we/the owners of this website will not be liable to you or to any third party (whether in contract, tort, or otherwise) for any direct, indirect or consequential loss or damage (including but not limited to any accident, injury, delay or loss of enjoyment) arising out of your reliance upon information contained on this website, including but not limited to your use (or inability to use) any products or services described or procured through this website.
When you pick up your vehicle, you will be required to sign a rental agreement with the supplier of the vehicle. Your rental and use of the vehicle will be governed by the terms of the rental agreement and any other documentation or information provided to you by the supplier at the time you pick up your vehicle. The rental agreement is between you and the supplier and we will not be liable to you or to any third party in relation to the terms of the supplier’s rental agreement or any other documentation provided to you by the supplier at the time of pick up.
While we will make reasonable efforts to ensure we are representing only reputable suppliers, we make no warranty about the fitness or suitability of any third party (supplier) product or service and will not accept responsibility for the quality or fitness of any vehicle. We welcome feedback from our customers on their experience with our suppliers. We may, at our discretion, provide you with reasonable assistance in resolving any dispute you may have with a supplier.
Our total liability to you in relation to your use of this website and the information contained on this website will not exceed the dollar amount of the deposit we have received from you in relation to your booking/rental. Your use of this website is governed by the laws of New Zealand and the jurisdiction of the New Zealand courts.
Booking information
To make a booking you must complete our booking form which is easy to follow and secured with the latest encryption technology. Once we receive your form, we will, subject to availability, confirm your booking by emailing you a confirmation voucher and invoice. The deposit required to secure your vehicle (as shown on the secure booking page) will only be processed on your credit card when your booking is confirmed. Please note that a 1.75% credit card charge will be added when your payment is processed.
A booking is confirmed when you have been emailed a confirmation voucher and at this stage the deposit is processed on your card and becomes non-refundable and any cancellation fees stated in the supplier's terms apply. Upon receipt of your confirmation, please check your details carefully and notify us immediately if there are any incorrect details, as it may not be possible to make changes at a later date.
If you are booking via phone, please make sure you have read the terms and conditions of the vehicle you wish to rent first. Our reservations consultant will ask you if you have read the terms and agree to them before proceeding. The onus is always on the renter to ensure they make themselves fully aware of the terms displayed on our website.
Information disclosure
In booking on this website you acknowledge that we disclose your information to your selected Supplier in order to provide the requested rental services.
Amendments
Please note that some suppliers treat an amendment as a new booking and apply the rate current at the time the amendment is made to recalculate the entire booking amount (not just the days changed). If the rental period is increased, an additional deposit may be required. If the rental period is shortened which results in a reduction of the rental charges, the deposit amount will remain unchanged, and the difference between the original and revised deposit is forfeited (it cannot be used towards remaining rental charges). To request a change to a confirmed booking, please use the alterations request link on your confirmation. Any alterations are subject to availability and the approval of the supplier. In addition to the alteration policy of the supplier stated in their terms, the following charges will apply:

Vehicle Capacity and fitness to drive
Under no circumstances are you permitted to carry more passengers than the vehicle you rent is legally registered to carry, and if you do your insurance may be invalidated. The number of seatbelts (and passengers) is indicated next to each vehicle on this website. Luggage capacity where shown is an indication only and we will not be responsible should you be unable to fit your entire luggage into a vehicle. It is your responsibility to choose a journey that is within your capabilities.
Note excess reduction 2 and PCO2 are included in the Smart Pack.
Standard insurance is included in the rate. A refundable bond/excess can be reduced by purchasing:
Excess Reduction Option 1
2 Berth Breezer, Nomad and 2 Berth Wanderer: NZ$14 per day (maximum charge per hire NZ$700). Bond and Excess will be reduced from NZ$1900 to NZ$950 .
Quattro & Six Pack: NZ$25 (maximum charge per hire NZ$1250) per day. Bond and Excess will be reduced from NZ$5000 to NZ$2500.
With Excess Reduction Option 1 the hirer is responsible for the first NZ$950 for the Breezer, Nomad and Wanderer and the first NZ$2,500 for the Quattro and Six Pack vehicles of ANY ACCIDENT COST of damage to Third Party property or to the rented vehicle, including single vehicle accident, windscreen and tyre damage, towing and recovery costs, theft, fire, break in or vandalism with the exception of the ‘exclusions’. This also includes the cost of the daily rental rate for the period the vehicle is off fleet for accident repairs. The excess applies in respect of each claim, not rental
Please see the ‘Exclusions’ section, whereby all Excess Reduction cover will be made void.
Excess Reduction option 2
Breezer, Nomad & Wanderer: NZ$20 per day (maximum charge per hire NZ$1000). Bond will be reduced from NZ$1900 to NZ$220 and Excess reduced to NIL.
Quattro & Six Pack: NZ$32 per (maximum charge per hire NZ$1600) day. Bond will be reduced from NZ$5000 to NZ$220 and Excess reduced to NIL.
The no worries cover option is a one off fee of NZD$50 per hire.
Note excess reduction 2 and PCO2 are included in the smart pack.
Please see the ‘Exclusions’ section, whereby all Excess Reduction cover will be made void.
EXCLUSIONS:
All insurance cover will be made void if any of the following ‘Exclusions’ are breached:
6. Damage caused to the vehicle by snow chains.
7. A single vehicle roll over occurs.
8. The Customer will be liable for any cost associated with the incorrect use of fuel or the use of Bio Diesel which should not be used (fuel being diesel or petrol), or water or other contamination of fuel.
9. The cost to retrieve or recover a vehicle, which may include, but is not limited to a vehicle that has become bogged, submerged or has been abandoned.
10. The cost to replace keys, which have been lost or retrieval of keys, which have been locked in a vehicle.
11. The vehicle rented may only be used to carry the maximum number of passengers as dictated by the vehicle type. If more passengers are carried than what is allowed Backpacker does not accept any liability.
12. Drivers not identified on the rental agreement and/or drivers that have a licence that has been cancelled or suspended and/or drivers who have a licence that is classified as a learners or probationary licence.
Debited bonds are subject to a 2% credit card administration fee in addition to the bond amount when credit card used is either a Visa or Master Card. The administration fee is refunded when the bond is refunded. If a bond is retained the administration fee is retained.
If an Excess Reduction Option is not selected, the security deposit is NZ$1,900 for the Breezer, Nomad and Wanderer campervans and NZ$5,000 for the Quattro and Six-Pack campervans payable by credit card.
The NZ$1,900/NZ$5,000 is debited to the hirer’s credit card when the vehicle is collected. For this reason it is important that the hirer have the funds available on the credit card and that the amount does not exceed the hirer’s daily withdrawal allowance available on the credit card.
If Excess Reduction Option 1 has been taken the security deposit is NZ$950 for the Breezer, Nomad and the Wanderer vehicles and NZ$2,500 for the Quattro and the Six Pack vehicles.
The NZ$950/$2,500 is taken as an imprint to the hirer’s credit card when the vehicle is collected. An imprint simply records a figure against the hirer’s credit card of NZ$950/$2,500 that Backpacker can then debit if required.
The security deposit is fully refundable provided the vehicle is returned on time, to the correct location, undamaged, with a clean interior and with full fuel tanks (fuel being petrol or diesel) and gas bottle. Except where the customer has purchased the Pre-Purchase Gas Option (PGO is included in the inclusive component) and/or Pre Purchase Fuel (PPF), failure to return the vehicle with full petrol or diesel tanks and/or a full LPG bottle will result in refill charges, which will be advised upon return of the vehicle.
Backpacker reserves the right to retain an NZ$220 cleaning fee if the vehicle is not returned with the interior in a clean condition. This includes smoking related cleaning, as smoking is not permitted in the vehicle. The toilet and waste water tank must be emptied prior to the return of the vehicle, or an additional NZ$125 soiling fee will be retained.
FOR SECURITY PURPOSES, ONLY THE HIRES CREDIT CARD CAN BE USED FOR VEHICLE SECURITY DEPOSIT
